Those familiar with traditional aspects of cancer treatment realize that chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery are basic treatments for almost every diagnosis. Some patient’s illnesses may not lend themselves to all three responses, and countless new treatments have thus been developed over the last decade. Patients are strongly encouraged to follow plans created by their health professional, but there are also other ways to do battle with disease in between doctor visits.
It has clear that cancer patients feel and respond better to traditional cancer treatment when supported by other alternative healing methods. These include specialized diets, exercise, and holistic measures. Some traditional physicians are still debating specialized diets, but all support whatever improves patient morale and physical condition. This could include music, light, or aroma therapy, visual imaging, humor, massage, meditation and yoga. Each has healing aspects, and when partnered with a sound traditional regime, they offer tangible benefits. Not only do patients recognize psychological advantages of being pro-active, resulting energy is often redirected into other beneficial practices. A positive chain begins, during which a patient’s morale improves.
Music, light, and aroma therapies may eliminate a good deal of stress in a patient’s daily life. Just having peaceful background music can do wonders to soothe an irritated disposition, just as turning down bright lights (or sitting in the sun) offer other types of psychological benefits. Aroma therapy benefits may appear less short-lived, but its advantages continue long after a scent remains. Most people’s lives are strongly influenced by smells they consider positive or negative, which clearly reflect memorable times in their lives. Constant olfactory reminders of unpleasant situations can only add more stress to an already demanding schedule. On the other hand, surrounding one’s self with smells that are pleasant, or which bring positive feelings, adds to an overall sense of enjoyment in one’s environment. Some scents are even known to generate reactions such as relaxation or optimism. Patients interested in pursuing this-along with the other therapies-are encouraged to research further.
Although there is not a great deal of documentation regarding visual imaging or humor utilization as part of standard treatment, there have been positive patient reports. It is found that such practices allow patients to achieve control in their reactions to illnesses. It has long been held that humor lowers blood pressure while serving as a general relaxant. Likewise, all message and exercise therapies aid in the improvement of mind/body connectivity. This is especially true with regards to yoga, where holding different positions optimize various glands and organs.
Another excellent practice is meditation, which can reduce depression, anxiety, and actual discomfort. Studies claim that it lowers tumor growth by as much as 10%, thus prolonging survival rates while improving the quality of life. It’s been found that discovered that the best form of meditation for cancer treatment is called “empty”, or not involving imagery. Empty meditation is based on letting go of thoughts to achieve mental emptiness. Resulting stillness allows the body’s energy to rise and battle the illness. Natural energy flow is thus resumed. It appears that this meditation, based on little-or no-conscious brain activity, should be maintained for 20 sessions, and then less frequently as part of a daily ritual. One Buddhist cancer meditation is more graphic: After quieting the body with breathing, the patient should visualize offering their diseased flesh to hungry beings. Once it is eaten, one should visualize their body as a white skeleton turning into dust. The patient thus should let go of all thoughts and remain at this level of emptiness for as long as possible. Another technique uses imagery to see one’s body on fire until it becomes light, or emptiness. Only then is the slate wiped clean; emptiness destroys what was bad. Piling conflicting energies atop each other is thus avoided.
Clearly, there are many ways in which cancer patients can help themselves on the road to feeling better physically and emotionally. Help is available today that was not known about 20 or even 10 years ago. This knowledge has uncovered a list of perfectly safe, inexpensive, and easily accessible choices regarding medical regime additions.
Best of all, these options are totally natural and have been around of thousands of years.
